It's very similar to nautical, except nautical refers toships, and maritime covers ships and other ocean-related stuff.

MERCHANT MARITIME NAVY CADET

Merchant Maritime Navy Cadet

Merchant Maritime Navy Cadet

A group of Merchant Navy Officers who are not only irked by the dearth of the maritime professionals but also the alarming restiveness of Nigerian youths brought about by the inability to gain admission into the tertiary institutions courtesy the failure to secure the required cut off of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board couple with problems of unemployment of graduates of the tertiary institutions, came together to deliberate on the way forward to prevent the seeming catastrophe that may result there from. They resolved to contribute their own quota and prevent the looming crisis
In their deliberations they opined that lack of proper guidance and counseling was majorly responsible for joblessness and unending waiting for admission into the various Universities. Many youths have wasted up to three or even four years for favorable JAMB result. This period of waiting is amply sufficient to conclude some vocational and professional courses of study. The maritime course is one of such. Consequently they resolved to establish a privately owned maritime institution to complement the existing institution of the government. The institution established is what is now known as MERCHANT NAVY MARITIME ACADEMY.

Merchant Navy Maritime Academy is a unique comprehensive one stop educational and Training center. The Academy has a pool of qualified faculty members with extensive maritime experience as well as high academic qualifications. This global network of staff projects the academy as an international player and major contributor to the maritime education and training world.

The Academy was established in 2008 and came on stream in April, 2009. It was registered with Corporate Affairs Commission in 2010 and the Ogun State Ministry of Education and has since grown from strength to strength.

COURSES AVAILABLE ARE:
1. Nautical Science
2. Marine Engineering
3. Shipping Management.

The Nautical Science graduands will work on board the deep sea-going vessels and they have a career spanning minimum of ten year from cadet ship to the highest position of the rank of a Captain depending on their ability to pass all their examinations as they come. The advantage to the parents and guardians is that further studies after the first four years the cost is expected to be borne by their wards and in fact responsible cadets suppose to be in a position not only to take care of their parents but also their siblings. The toiling of the parents and guardians is believed to end the moment they start their practical training on board as they are expected to earn some stipend.
The cadets are being fed on board hence the belief that they should be self sufficient.

The Marine Engineering cadets follow similar training pattern like their nautical science colleagues except that their ranking is slightly different culminating in the rank of a Chief Engineer. Every other aspect of progress follow the same pattern as in the case of nautical science cadets.

The Shipping Management student training is shore based and the cadets are attached to shipping agents, shipping companies and port authorities. Their progression is as obtained in any management organization but shipping biased. The other cadets also are giving managerial training to launch them into shore based employment. The shipping management cadets apart from their acedemic qualifications will have added advantage in their chosen career if they affiliate with professional bodies such as Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers (CIS) and others.

INCORPORATION OF A SHIPPING COMPANY.
The officers who are the founding fathers of the Maritime Academy have further made steps in acheiving their set objectives by incorporating a Merchant Navi Shipping Line Limited with the Corporate Affairs Commission. This is to further assist the placement of the cadets for their practical training and subsequently job placement. This has been achieved to a larger extent but yet to reach full potential. Practical steps heve been taken to sure its full actualisation in the year 2014

MOVEMENT TO PERMANENT SITE IN OWU IKOSI AGBOWA IKOSI LGDA.
Arrangements are in top gear to move finally to the permanent site of the Academy come January, 2014.

Bathymetric Survey

Bathymetric Survey in Progress

Bathymetric Survey in Progress

What is Bathymetric Survey?

There is a great demand for accurate and high-resolution seafloor topography (bathymetric) data. However, at pres ent availability of such data remains spatially incomplete and limited. Bathymetry in shallow water areas is challenging for vessel-based bathymetric surveys and this zone is where remote sensing typically outperforms traditional methods such as echo sounding. The obvious advantages over conventional echo sounding methods include the wide data availability, synoptic surface coverage, and improved spatial resolution. Due to the high cost associated with traditional bathymetric surveys, the availability of up-to-date bathymetric charts in developing countries is rare or limited to a few charts for some areas. In this study, a ratio-transform model was applied on Landsat imagery to derive bathymetry at sites in nine rivers and creeks along the Nigerian coastal area. Accuracy tests comparing the image-derived bathymetry with reference data from echo sounding of Lighthouse Creek in Lagos and hydrographic charts of the other sites confirms good agreement at some sampled locations. The results of this study prove that this remote sensing method can augment existing hydrographic datasets in the country and is a useful reconnaissance tool for hydrographic surveying offices. It also offers a viable interim solution for areas where there is inadequate hydrographic data and scarce resources for extensive surveys using other methods.

What are bathymetric techniques?

Bathymetric surveys allow us to measure the depth of a water body as well as map the underwater features of a water body. Multiple methods can be used for bathymetric surveys: Multi-beam surveying: A multibeam echo sounder attached to a boat sends out a wide array of beams across a "swath" of the waterbody floor.

New Tool for Shallow Water Bathymetry.

Unabara, a manufacturer of innovative tools for shallow water hydrography and oceanography, has announced its Hydro-2F Multi-Frequency Synthetic Beam Bathymetric & Sea Floor Sonar. The new solution provides both 200Khz precision bathymetry and narrow-beam low-frequency bathymetry.

Particularly suited for shallow waters, the user may field select a low acoustic frequency of 30, 28, 24, 18, 12, or 10Khz. As a supplement to the bathymetric data, the Hydro-2F provides acoustic backscatter data from the sea floor for Bottom Contrasting differences in sediment types.

Hydrographic survey software
With all electronics and transducer elements housed in a single below surface unit (BSU), the Hydro-2F interfaces directly with the user’s Windows-based PC. The user then utilises his existing hydrographic mapping software; or Unabara can provide seamless integration to Hydromagic survey software (by Eye4Software of The Netherlands). This integrated package provides for not only dual frequency derived depth data, overlayed with GPS position and satellite photographs but also generates an augmented reality video and paper chart. Sediment characteristics can be included on the resulting map presentatons.

Bathymetric maps are increasingly important as scientists learn more about the effects of climate change on the environment. Bathymetric surveys can alert scientists to ongoing and potential beach erosion, sea-level rise, and subsidence (land sinking). ... Bathymetry is a key element of biological oceanography.
